The element helium was added to the periodic table 150 years ago. The signature of this element was first detected in Andhra Pradesh during a solar eclipse in 1868. To commemorate this occasion, Collins Learning and the Nehru Planetarium collaborated to conduct workshops for students to inspire curiosity and aptitude for science in them. Dr Rathnasree Nandivada, Director – Nehru Planetarium, Delhi and Professor Biman B. Nath, Astrophysicist – Raman Research Institute, Bengaluru conducted these engaging sessions, which were widely appreciated by the schools.
Collins India brings the popular SCRABBLE™ championship to schools in India
SCRABBLE™ championship will offer winners chance to represent India in France
Collins India, the fastest growing K-12 publisher of textbooks for the CBSE, ICSE and state board curriculum in Indian schools, has launched the popular School SCRABBLE™ championship program in India, in association with Mindsports Academy. The championship which is open to schools initially across three cities will offer winners a chance to represent India at the World Youth Scrabble Championships in Lille, France in the month of August 2016.
The regional level championships will be held in Chandigarh and Hyderabad between 19th to 22nd July. Schools from these cities will first sign up on the Mindsports Academy website to take part in the competition. The registered schools will then setup SCRABBLE™ clubs in their schools for interested students, aged between 8 to 12 years. These clubs would then initiate the tournament within the school and Collins India as well as Mindsports Academy will assist the school authorities in scoring the games, recording the results and judging the winners.
Regional finalists from each city will represent India at the World Youth Scrabble Championships, Lille, France to be held in August 2016. The National Championship will also be held at the venue in Lille.
Speaking on the occasion, Ananth Padmanabhan, CEO, HarperCollins India said, “We take immense pleasure in extending the School SCRABBLE™ championship program in India, in association with the Mindsports Academy. We are excited by the possibilities of this initiative to encourage students across the country to take to words like never before.”
Dave Brannan, Chairman of Mindsports Academy added that “The Mindsports Academy is excited at the opportunity to create new and exciting ways in which to learn and compete using Scrabble and other skill based games.. Along with our partner Collins we aim to build a lasting School Scrabble competition and learning programme across India with players of all ages and abilities taking part. We are already working with a selection of the world’s most respected corporations and Mindsports brands, the company works globally to promote the value of cognitive skills development to schools, clubs and individuals and believes that India can lead the way in creating new ways for students to learn and compete and the highest level.”
Dr. Elaine Higgleton, the International Publisher for Collins Learning further stated, “I’ve been involved with Scrabble – on the book publishing side – for twenty years and it is very fulfilling to see the launch of the schools Scrabble competition in India. Scrabble is the ultimate educational game; players need exemplary vocabulary and spelling skills, well-honed mental maths skills and the ability to think strategically to be able to beat their opponents. I’m looking forward to seeing Scrabble cups starting to appear in principals’ offices all over India in the years to come, and to the year that a competitor from the India schools Scrabble wins the World Youth Scrabble Championship. It can only be a matter of time! Good luck to everyone taking part this year.”
